THE RUNDOWN
Hosting their first-ever Lone Star Conference Tournament match at Patriot Soccer Field, the DBU Men's Soccer Team advanced 4-3 on penalty kicks over Texas A&M International in the LSC quarterfinals. The teams were tied at three goals apiece in penalty kicks when Giovanni Enriquez scored the game-winning goal to send the Patriots into a matchup with West Texas A&M in the LSC semifinals.
The Patriots and Dustdevils played to an offensive stalemate in the first half. Despite controlling much of the first half offensively and outshooting TAMIU 8-0, the Patriots were unable to capitalize on any of their attempts.
The pace of the game increased in the second half and both teams improved in shots with DBU's nine and TAMIU's four. The Patriots were the first to put a point on the board when Hunter Dierlam's long cross met Peyton Voelker whose shot found the back of the net in the 59th minute. The Dustdevils responded five minutes later with Jorge Amaya's long shot from outside the box resulting in a goal. DBU's final attempt to take the lead came in the 88th minute when Peyton Voelker's shot was intercepted by TAMIU goalkeeper Gal Grodetzki, leading into a five-minute break before the first overtime.
The Patriots saw four great opportunities in the first overtime led by Gavyn Rosales. Three were saved by Grodetzki, and Rosales's best opportunity to go up came in the 94th minute when his shot ricocheted off the right post. Still tied at 1-1, the teams prepared for the second overtime. Despite DBU's three shots and TAMIU's two, the second overtime ended scoreless, prompting a series of penalty kicks.
In penalty kicks, TAMIU scored first followed by a block of DBU's first attempt. The Dustdevils scored again on the second PK, and freshman Dylan Berry responded with a goal to put the Patriots within a goal. Alexander Knepper made a key block on TAMIU's third attempt, and Gavyn Rosales scored a second consecutive goal for DBU, tying the tally at 2-2 with two rounds of kicks left. The Dustdevils missed their fourth attempt, and Chase Turcotte added a third goal to make the score 3-2. On TAMIU's final attempt, Knepper blocked Lassana Diakite's shot, giving DBU a chance to win in the final penalty kick. It was Giovanni Enriquez who scored the game-winning penalty kick to advance the Patriots to the next round of postseason.
