Patriots Lose Third Game to No. 22 Southern Mississippi, 7-2

THE RUNDOWN
DBU (7-4) was unable to avoid a sweep at the hands of No. 22 Southern Mississippi (8-3) on Sunday in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. It is the first time the Patriots have lost all three games of a weekend series since 2018 versus Clemson.

Southern Miss came swinging out of the gates. The Golden Eagles pieced together three singles from their first four batters to push across a run in the bottom of the first.

The momentum carried over into the second inning when, following a leadoff walk by Danny Lynch, Christopher Sargent hit a two-run homer to make it a 3-0 game.

Sargent put another two-run shot over the outfield wall of Pete Taylor Park in the fourth to extend the deficit to five.

With the bases load and one out in the top of the fifth, Miguel Santos recorded his 17th RBI of the year on an infield single to score George Specht.  Ethan Mann added what would be DBU's last run of the game on a sacrifice fly to left field with Nate Rombach sliding into home plate just ahead of the tag.

After two innings' worth of zeros on the board, Southern Miss tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth via a sacrifice fly and a single to right field to stretch the margin to five, 7-2.

The Patriots could not find an open spot on the field in ninth, grounding out once and flying out twice to end the game.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The Golden Eagles' seven runs are the most the Patriots have allowed in a game this season.
- George Specht went 2-for-4 on Sunday with a double and a run scored. His double gives DBU an extra-base hit in all but one game this season.
- With a pair of free passes on Sunday, Jace Grady has walked at least once in four of the last five games.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
.170 - The Patriot bats hit an uncharacteristically low .170 over the weekend.
4 - DBU's four-game losing streak is their longest since the 2017 season.
5 - Bryson Hammer has totale five or more strikeouts in each of his three starts.

UP NEXT
The Patriots stay on the road for a showdown with I-35 rival Baylor on Tuesday. First pitch is schedule for 6:30 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.
