THE RUNDOWN
The No. 5 ranked DBU Patriots (5-1) defeated the No. 24 ranked Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (2-1) Saturday afternoon at The Burg Center. Shooting 48% from the field, the Patriot offense rode their efficiency through all 40 minutes en route to a victory in their home opener. Ricky Lujan led the way with 17 points, followed closely by Cameron Kahn's 16.
After trailing by as much as eight points early on, the Patriots turned up the heat, firing off a 21-2 scoring run midway through the first half. Cameron Kahn poked a team-leading three steals in the first half, leading a transition offense that allowed Ricky Lujan to flourish, as he shot four for six in a momentous first half. Xavion Brown led the group with a +17 +/- in the first half, contributing four assists and two rebounds before the break.Â
Arkansas Tech drew close midway through the second half, but once again the Patriots would respond by rattling off an exotic 19-3 run to put the game away. Drew Calderon was perfect from beyond the arc in the second half, and his three three-pointers led the team. Xavion Brown would dish out another four assists and haul six rebounds in the second half. Brown would finish with a line of 2/8/8, with a steal and a block. His eight rebounds led the team, and his assist total led everyone on the floor. Â
The Burg Center was electric all afternoon, but its noise levels peaked when Xavion Brown and Drew Calderon landed consecutive power punches in the form of dunks 50 seconds apart in the second half. The Patriot faithful will return louder than ever during the homecoming contest next weekend when Mississippi College makes the trip to Dallas.Â
