No. 5 DBU Routs Colorado Mesa, Completes Perfect Weekend at South Central Region Challenge

THE RUNDOWN
No. 5 DBU closed out a perfect weekend at the South Central Region Challenge with a 92-69 win over Colorado Mesa on Saturday at the CCU Event Center in Lakewood, Colorado. The Patriots jumped out to a 46-30 lead through the first half and were never threatened in a 23-point victory against the Mavericks. DBU was led by redshirt sophomore guard Trevor Frank, who led all scorers with 16 points.

After falling behind 14-10 through the first five minutes, a Frank three-pointer ignited a 17-2 run for the Patriots. Drew Calderon capped off the run with a fastbreak layup to put DBU up by 11 points with 9:36 to play in the half. Colorado Mesa would pull back to within seven of the Patriots before DBU responded with six straight points, and a Jackson McCabe dunk extended the lead to 13 with just under five minutes to play until the break.

Frank caught fire for DBU in the final moments of the half, draining a shot from beyond the arc and driving inside the paint for a pair of layups. Two free throws from McAbe before time expired handed DBU a 16-point lead going into the break.

Ricky Lujan knocked down a three for the first points of the second half. The Mavericks responded with a 10-2 run to trim the Patriot lead to 11, but another three-pointer from Frank put DBU back in control. The Patriots would eventually go by 21 points after a Lujan shot from downtown.

Leading 79-63 with just over four minutes to play, the Patriots scored 11 straight, capped off by a pair of free throws from Junior Goodlet to go up 90-63 with 1:11 left on the clock. Two free throws from Jerrin Canafax closed out the scoring for the Patriots in the 23-point win over the Mavericks.

DBU HEAD COACH BLAKE FLICKNER POST-GAME COMMENTS
"Really proud of our effort today. That was a gritty win against another really well coached team. Forty-six bench points reflects an incredible effort by a team. They were physical and our guys responded really well. Jacko had a great game today and it was great to see the ball go in. Excited to get back to Texas and play in the Burg in front of our Patriot faithful."
