THE RUNDOWN
No 13 DBU Baseball used a
Miguel Santos walk-off RBI double to earn a 5-4 win over Texas A&M Corpus Christi and secure the series sweep on Sunday at Horner Ballpark. The win hands the Patriots their third weekend series sweep of the season before DBU opens Conference USA play next week.Â
Scoreless through the first three innings, Islanders' junior outfielder Josh Blount ripped an RBI double into the right-center field gap in the top of the fourth to get A&M-Corpus Christi on the scoreboard. That would be the only run given up by DBU starter
Luke Pettitte, who had a strong start going 4.0 innings, giving up just two hits and striking out six batters.
In the top of the fifth, the Islanders doubled their lead as Garrett Gruell lined an RBI double down the left field line to put A&M Corpus Christi up 2-0. In the bottom half of the inning, the Patriots drew even as
Joey Nerat continued his hot hitting with a two-run double to knot things up.Â
With the game still tied in the seventh, the Islanders would get a clutch two-out RBI single from Isaac Webb to take a 4-2 lead. Once again, DBU had an answer as the Patriots used an RBI single from
Miguel Santos in the seventh, and
Ethan Mann tied the game in the eighth on a solo shot to left for his fifth home run of the year.
Nick Wilson came on in the ninth inning and threw a scoreless inning despite two singles and a walk from the Islanders. Needing one run to win the game,
Tom Poole drew a two-out walk, setting the stage for
Miguel Santos. The Patriots' senior second baseman drove 3-2 pitch to the wall in right-center that sent Poole all the way home from first base to complete the comeback win.
