THE RUNDOWN
No. 10 DBU rode an outstanding performance from its pitching staff to defeat No. 14 Oklahoma 6-0 on Tuesday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman, Oklahoma. The Patriots used five pitchers to complete the shutout victory over the Sooners.
Ethan Mann, who was coming off Conference USA Hitter of the Week honors, c
ontinued to stay red-hot, crushing a solo home run over the left field wall to give DBU the first lead of the game in the top of the second. Following suit was Chayton Krauss, who blasted a two-run homer in the fourth to give the Patriots a 3-0 advantage.
The score remained the same for most of the game due to superb pitching from the Patriots' pitching staff. Freshman Charlie Atkinson received the start on Tuesday, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, and registering two strikeouts.
Tyler Schott entered the game in the bottom of the third with runners at second and third and induced Bryce Madron into a groundout to help the Patriots escape the inning.
Jerrod JenkinsÂ
followed Schott and provided a terrific appearance out of the pen for DBU. In 3.1 innings, Jenkins allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out two.
The Patriots' pitching was backed by an incredible defense that played error-free baseball on Tuesday night against Oklahoma.
In the seventh and eighth innings, DBU went to Conner Mackay, who worked 1.1 innings without allowing a base runner to reach and struck out a pair.
In the final inning, the Patriots were able to add three insurance runs to pad the lead. Michael DattaloÂ
and Ben TryonÂ
started the ninth with singles to help spark the momentum. After Miguel SantosÂ
was walked to load the bases, Grant JayÂ
was also issued a free pass, giving DBU a 4-0 lead. The second run of the inning came home when Keaton Grady scored on a wild pitch. The final run of the night was scored on an RBI single from Mann, giving the Patriots their third run of the inning and sixth of the night.
Finishing off the Sooners was electric closer Nick Wilson. The Patriots' senior right-hander allowed one hit and let the DBU defense work with a double play and a pop fly to secure the 6-0 victory for DBU.
