No. 10 Patriots Use Johnson's Complete Game to Defeat Sam Houston

THE RUNDOWN
No. 10 DBU took game one of their weekend series at Sam Houston with a 3-1 victory over the Bearkats on Friday night at Don Sanders Stadium in Huntsville, Texas. The Patriots were led by an outstanding performance from their ace, Ryan Johnson, who pitched a complete game and struck out a carer-high 15 batters en route to his fourth win of the year.

DBU's bats came to life early against Sam Houston starter Coltin Atkinson when Tom Poole sparked the offense with a lead-off double down the right-field line in the top of the second. Taking full advantage, Luke Heefner laced a timely single up the middle to bring Poole home and give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.

Neither team was able to score in the next two innings, but in the fifth, Nathan Humphreys reached base on a walk, setting the stage for Miguel Santos. Right on cue, Santos delivered a blast over the right field wall for a two-run homer, giving the Patriots insurance runs and a 3-0 advantage over the Bearkats.

The score remained the same until the ninth inning, mainly due to Johnson's brilliant performance on the mound. In his complete game effort, Johnson fanned 15 batters, only allowing four hits, and issued just one walk.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Sam Houston staged a late rally. On the first pitch of Caleb Cotton's at-bat, the Bearkats' lead-off man drilled a triple to keep Sam Houston's alive. Next up, Walker Janek, extended his hit streak to 27 games with an RBI double to put some pressure on the Patriots.

Remaining steady under pressure as he had all night, Johnson induced a fly ball out to left field to end the game with a gritty 3-1 road win for DBU in their CUSA opener.
