No. 10 Patriots Drop Series Finale at Sam Houston

THE RUNDOWN
No. 10 DBU dropped their series finale 6-5 at Sam Houston on Sunday afternoon at Don Sanders Stadium in Huntsville, Texas. The Patriots maintained a slight lead for the majority of the ballgame, but a walk-off single in the ninth allowed the Bearkats to salvage the series.

In the top of the first, Grant Jay appeared to crush a three-run homer, but after Jay passed up Joey Nerat while running the bases, Jay was called out, and DBU took a 2-0 lead.

Two batters later, Chayton Krauss made up for the run that was erased with a solo shot to left center, adding another run for the Patriots.

Sam Houston immediately answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer to cut the deficit to just one.

Nathan Humphreys slashed an RBI double into center field to score Michael Dattalo in the 7th, creating a 4-2 advantage for DBU.

The Bearkats answered the call again, scoring first on a wild pitch, then again on a fielder's choice. The final run of the seventh was scored on an RBI single up the middle, giving Sam Houston their first lead of the game at 5-4.

Luke Heefner drilled an automatic double in the following inning, allowing Jay to score and tie the game at five apiece. The Patriots would strand runners on second and third, leaving the game even going into the ninth.

On the mound, Luke Pettitte received the start for DBU on Sunday. In 4.0 innings of action, Pettitte allowed two earned runs and registered four strikeouts. Charlie Atkinson was instrumental in limiting damage, as he kept the Bearkats scoreless in a bases-loaded situation. In 1.2 innings of action, Atkinson allowed two earned runs.

In the bottom of the ninth, Sam Houston loaded the bases for the second time but was able to capitalize this time around. An RBI single off the bat of Hunter Autrey was enough to score Walker Janek and give the Bearkats a 6-5 win to finish the series.
