No. 7 Patriots Take Game One 8-3 Over Aggies

THE RUNDOWN
No. 7 DBU used a six-run fourth inning to pull away in an 8-3 victory over New Mexico State in game one of a three-game series at Horner Ballpark. Ryan Johnson was dominant once again, allowing just three hits in 7.0 scoreless innings.

For the second consecutive game, Michael Dattalo scored the first run of the game for the Patriots on a solo home run.

Two innings later in the fourth, DBU put together one of their signature crooked number innings to extend the lead. Joey Nerat brought in the first two runs of the inning on an opposite-field double down the left-field line, scoring Chayton Krauss and Luke Heefner. The Patriots added three more runs after Nathan Humphreys hit a double of his own to score Nerat and Grant Jay, with Tom Poole also making it home on an error in right field. Finishing the inning, Miguel Santos grounded out at second but enabled Humphreys to score from third, giving DBU a 7-0 lead.

Dattalo drove in his second run of the night on a sacrifice fly in the fifth that plated Heefner and extended DBU's lead to eight.

Patriot ace Ryan Johnson followed up his complete game from last week with another masterful performance on Thursday. In 7.0 shutout innings, Johnson allowed just three hits and three walks while registering nine strikeouts.

After Johnson's exit, New Mexico State was able to score a couple of runs in the eigth versus River Ridings and Jace Russell. A double to left center from Keith Jones scored the first run, and a wild pitch allowed Jones to make it home, cutting the deficit to 8-2.

With the bases loaded and one out, Charlie Atkinson entered the game and immediately forced a groundout that Santos and Krauss turned into DBU's third double play of the night. Atkinson pitched the final 1.2 innings of the ballgame, allowing one earned run and sealed an 8-3 victory on a flyout to Ethan Mann in left.
