Patriots Throw No-Hitter to Secure Sweep Over FIU

THE RUNDOWN
DBU's Jerrod Jenkins and James Ellwanger combined to throw a seven-inning no-hitter to help lift the Patriots to an 11-0 run-rule win over FIU on Sunday in Miami, Florida. Jenkins and Ellwanger combined to strikeout 10 batters in the victory over the Panthers as the Patriots improved to 10-5 in Conference USA play.

James Ellwanger returned to the starting rotation in his first appearance on the mound since March 3 versus Alabama. In a quick inning of work, Ellwanger induced a flyout and groundout before registering a strikeout to retire the side in order.

Tom Poole put the Patriots on the scoreboard in the third with an RBI double to right-center, putting DBU up 1-0. Grant Jay extended the lead with a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Chayton Krauss to tag up and score. Ethan Mann then doubled down the left-field line to bring home Poole and score the third run of the inning.

The Patriots would top the three-spot in the third inning with a seven-spot in the fifth. Poole started the scoring with a two-run shot over the left-field wall to make it a 5-0 ballgame.

Alex Pendergast refueled the momentum with a double to left field with two outs to plate a run. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Michael Dattalo launched a grand slam over the left field wall to break the game open.

Jerrod Jenkins recorded an immaculate inning in the bottom of the sixth, striking out the side on nine pitches. In the no-hitter, Jenkins walked two batters and registered nine strikeouts.

To add the final run in the 11-0 win, Pendergast earned his second RBI of the day on a double down the right field line in the seventh.

After walking the lead-off man in the bottom of the seventh, Jenkins retired the next three batters, including a strikeout of Austin Dearing to record the final out and complete the no-hitter.

After the Patriots' seven-inning victory on Sunday, DBU has swept five weekend series in 2024.
