No. 7 Patriots Drop Series Opener at Western Kentucky

THE RUNDOWN
No. 7 DBU saw their five-game win streak snapped in a 4-1 loss to Western Kentucky at Nick Denes Field in Bowling Green, Kentucky on Friday. The Patriots were limited to just one run and four hits in game one of the three-game series versus WKU.

The Hilltoppers took advantage of a passed ball on a strikeout to plate their first runner of the game. After Ethan Lizama reached second on a fielder's choice, Western Kentucky took a 1-0 lead on an RBI double from Camden Ross.

In the low-scoring affair, Ryan Johnson suffered his first loss of the season. In 7.0 innings, Johnson allowed six hits and two earned runs while registering nine strikeouts.

DBU finally tied the game in the fifth after Michael Dattalo singled up the middle, and Miguel Santos crushed an RBI double down the right field line to even the score.

WKU swiftly responded in the bottom of the inning, retaking the lead after a single and a Caleb Marmo two-run homer versus Johnson to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

Adding another run in the sixth, the Hilltoppers took advantage of a Patriots' error and extended the lead to 4-1 on an RBI single off the bat of Austin Haller through the right side.

After Johnson's exit, Connor Benge made quick work of WKU, striking out all three batters he faced and giving DBU a chance in the top of the 9th.

Hilltoppers' ace Jack Bennett nearly finished a complete game versus the Patriots, going 8.2 innings and recording 11 strikeouts, before WKU turned to Mason Burns to get the final out of the game.
