No. 7 DBU Falls 6-3 to Hilltoppers

THE RUNDOWN
No. 7 DBU lost to Western Kentucky 6-3 on Saturday at Nick Denes Field in Bowling Green, Kentucky, to lose its first series of the season. The Patriots outhit the Hilltoppers seven to four but could not capitalize with runners in scoring position in their second straight loss to WKU.

After two scoreless innings of play, the Hilltoppers struck first, breaking the tie on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. Despite needing one out to escape the inning, the Hilltoppers were not done extending the lead.

One more run would score on a double steal of home, and Ethan Lizama tripled down the right field line to make it a 3-0 ballgame. WKU finished the crooked inning with an RBI single through the right side, forcing the Patriots to play from behind again.

In the fifth, the Hilltoppers added two more runs, taking advantage of a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt to bring home another run. Blake Cavill laid down another successful sacrifice bunt to build a 6-0 advantage over DBU.

Jaron DeBerry suffered his first loss of the season on the mound for the Patriots. In 6.0 innings, DeBerry allowed five earned runs on four hits and three walks, while registering six strikeouts.

After DeBerry's exit, Charlie Atkinson entered and provided the Patriots with two shutout innings.

Miguel Santos put DBU on the board in the eighth with a leadoff solo home run over the left field wall. After a couple of walks, Michael Dattalo knocked an RBI single into left field to make it a more manageable 6-2 game.

With one inning to rally, Ethan Mann crushed an RBI single and advanced to third on a fielding error from the left fielder. The potential rally would end after Grant Jay grounded out, and the Patriots fell 6-3 to Western Kentucky.
