Johnson Sets Single-Season Strikeout Record as Patriots Defeat Liberty in Game One

THE RUNDOWN
DBU Baseball used a strong start on Friday from Ryan Johnson, who set the single-season strikeout record, to defeat Liberty 5-2 to open their final CUSA home series at Horner Ballpark. Johnson recorded his 137th strikeout to set the new single-season record and also became the first Patriot in program history to register 300 career strikeouts in the win over the Flames.

DBU struck in the first when Miguel Santos drove a two-out RBI double down the line in right to score Tom Poole from first base. The Patriots added two more runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a Liberty throwing error on a Santos infield single and a bloop base hit from Ethan Mann to go up 3-0.

DBU would get another on a solo home run by Alex Pendergast in the seventh to make it 4-0 before Liberty got on the board in the top of the eighth with a two-run homer from Brayden Horton.

The Patriots grabbed an insurance run in the eighth when they capitalized off another error from the Flames. Santos' single to deep short resulted in a throwing error by Tanner Marsh, and right fielder Noah Rabon fumbled to the ball in right, allowing Poole to score to make it 5-2 heading to the ninth.

Connor Mackay came out of the pen to retire the side in order and notch his team-leading sixth save of the season.
