DBU Survives Late Rally to Take Down Jax State

THE RUNDOWN
DBU held on for a 10-9 win over Jacksonville State after allowing a 9-1 lead to slip away in a game that was suspended on Friday due to lightning. The Patriots and Gamecocks concluded the game on Saturday at Horner Ballpark with DBU surviving to claim their seventh win by one run this season.

Patriot ace Ryan Johnson struck out the side to begin the game and proceeded to do the same in the third. In 5.0 innings of work, Johnson gave up just two hits and no walks while recording 11 strikeouts and allowing just one earned run.

The Patriots' offense picked up the pace in the second, with Michael Dattal delivering an RBI single and advancing to second on a throwing error. Tom Poole crushed a solo home run with one out in the third inning. Two batters later, Grant Jay slammed a two-run homer, and Luke Heefner followed with a homer on the first pitch of his at-bat.

After Jacksonville State answered in the fourth with an RBI single to left field, cutting the deficit to 6-1, DBU added three more runs, highlighted by a two-run single from Dattalo.

The Gamecocks began to slowly cut into the lead in the sixth and seventh innings, starting with a two-run single by Logan Walters into right-center followed by a sacrifice fly to make it a 9-4 ballgame. Jax State added its fifth run the next inning with another sacrifice fly into centerfield.

Joey Nerat reached on a fielding error to bring home another run in the seventh, but the Gamecocks were far from finished. Trailing 10-5 in the top of the ninth and facing Tyler Schott, Jax State began the inning with a solo homer off the bat of pinch-hitter Hudson Walburn.

Jax State would add more pressure with a slashing RBI double by Caleb Johnson nto left-center, narrowing the lead to just 10-7. With one out,  Derrick Jackson Jr. launched a two-run home run to left field to inch even closer to the Patriots' lead.

Senior closer Conner Mackay relieved Schott with one out in the ninth, trying to fight off the vicious rally. Mackay struck out the first batter he faced before the lighting delay postponed the game into the next day.

Threatening to tie the game, the Gamecocks struck for two quick single to put runners on first and third. With two outs and the go-ahead run on base, Mackay struck out Will Fincher to give DBU a 10-9 victory.
