DBU Defeats Texas A&M-Kingsville in Lone Star Conference Opener

THE RUNDOWN
Thursday night, DBU (5-4, 1-0 LSC) surpassed the 100-point plateau for the second time this season in a dominating road win over Texas A&M-Kingsville (3-3, 0-1 LSC), as the Patriots opened conference play on the happy side of the win column. Bishop Jones and Trevor Frank led everyone on the floor with 21 and 20 points, respectively, on a 60% combined shooting percentage.

Trevor Frank opened the scoring with a three, and thus would begin a three-point barrage for both sides. After the teams traded buckets through the first couple of minutes, TJ Thomas landed a three that gave DBU a 13-10 lead, and the Patriots would hold onto that advantage for the rest of the game. Entering the halftime break up by nine, the two teams shared identical shooting analytics in all categories but one: free throws. The Patriots were nearly 20% more efficient at the line than TAMUK in the first half, capitalizing on the fouls they drew.

In the second half, DBU held Kingsville to just a 35.7% field goal percentage compared to their own 52.9% efficiency. Outscoring the Javelinas by 23 in the final frame, the Patriots were able to coast to their first conference win of the season. DBU's defense proved tonight that an unstoppable force can move an immovable object, forcing 18 turnovers from a Kingsville offense that averaged a nation's best 6.8 turnovers per game entering tonight.

Coach Dr. Blake Flickner had this to say regarding Thursday's win: "Great team effort tonight. Kingsville has good speed and presents some challenges, but our guys really responded to the challenge. We shot the ball well, which always helps, but we also guarded well as a team. Really proud of our effort on the road to start LSC play."

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- For the third consecutive game, the Patriots shot 50% or better from the field (33/66 tonight).
- DBU shot their second-most efficient game from beyond the arc tonight, turning in a 41.7% three-point percentage.
