THE RUNDOWN
The No. 17 ranked DBU Patriots (14-5) defeated the UTSA Roadrunners (16-6) in seven innings on Sunday afternoon, securing the series rubber match. Rian Schwede and Jerrod Jenkins tossed seven innings of four-run ball to secure the win.
In the first inning, DBU and UTSA combined to score eight runs. The Roadrunners were able to scratch two across in the top half, before the Pats rattled off six of their own, batting around the order. Chayton Krauss, Tom Poole, Keaton Grady, and Luke Heefner each tallied RBI knocks in the bottom of the first.
Schwede would allow two more runs in the top of the third, before being pulled for Jenkins.Â
Keaton Grady and Luke Heefner reached base to open the bottom of the third and then completed a successful double-steal. This set the table for an eventual Krauss RBI on a play where he reached on an error.
Jenkins would toss the first of his four scoreless frames in the top of the fourth before the Patriot bats fired off another six-run inning. Jake Bennett launched a mammoth three-run homer, which was followed by Grady, Heefner, and Humphreys loading the bases for Grant Jay. Jay would then clear the bases with his seventh double of the year, making the score 13-4.Â
In the bottom of the fifth, Jake Bennett golfed a low off-speed offering over the left field fence, for his first two-home run game of the season, giving the Pats a ten-run lead.Â
Scoring on both sides would halt for the remainder of the game, as Jenkins continued to deal. Jenkins finished the afternoon with four and two-thirds innings pitched, allowing no runs on three hits, and striking out four.
