No. 17 DBU Drops Series Finale to New Mexico State

THE RUNDOWNThe No. 17 ranked DBU Patriots (18-9, 4-2 CUSA) fell to the New Mexico State Aggies (15-13, 3-3 CUSA) Sunday night to conclude the second conference series of the year. The Pats have won both CUSA series' two games to one and face Western Kentucky next weekend at home.

In a low-scoring contest compared to Friday and Saturday, New Mexico State scored all four of their runs in the first inning. The Aggies did so with an RBI single and two-run homer with no outs, before scratching the fourth run across on a wild pitch with two away.

DBU was held off the board until the third inning, where Landon Underhill drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a Nathan Humphreys double, making it 4-1 after the top of the third.

The score would remain 4-1 until the eighth, as Ryan Borberg settled in. Borberg allowed just two hits after the lengthy first inning and finished with 5.2 innings pitched and seven strikeouts.

The Aggies held the Patriot bats to just five hits which is the lowest total DBU has recorded in any weekend game so farthis season.

In the top of the eighth Grant Jay worked a one-out walk, setting the table for an Adam Berghult pinch-hit home run (3). Liam Watt and Mason Peters tag-teamed the bottom half to keep the deficit at one heading into the ninth.

Dylan Schlaegel worked an eight-pitch one-out walk to put the tying run on base with DBU's backs against the wall. Schlaegel advanced to second on a ground out, putting a runner in scoring position with two outs. Michael Dattalo was then intentionally walked, putting two runners on for Nathan Humphreys. Humphreys then launched a deep fly ball to right-center, but it would die at the track to end the afternoon.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Tyler Schott, Mason Swinney, Liam Watt, and Mason Peters combined to throw 2.1 innings of scoreless ball out of the bullpen.
- Schott hasn't allowed a run in his last three appearances (2.2 IP).
- Ryan Borberg's seven strikeouts tied a season-high (March 4 vs Oklahoma).
