DBU Defeats UT Permian Basin, Notches 10th Win of the Season

THE RUNDOWN
DBU (10-4, 4-0 LSC) dismantled the UT Permian Basin Falcons (4-9, 0-5 LSC) Friday evening by a score of 94-72, to extend the Patriots' win streak to eight. Justin Haire and Drew Calderon led the team in points with 15 each, on a night where five Patriots ended in double figures. Haire also posted his first double-double of the season, adding ten rebounds to his team-leading point total.

A Drew Calderon three-pointer was the source of DBU's first bucket, tying the game at three. Calderon's basket would springboard a 12-0 Patriot run, and the Falcons wouldn't see another lead for the rest of the night. DBU maintained a lead of ten or more throughout the first 15 minutes of the first half, but UTPB rattled off a 12-0 run of their own, shrinking the Patriot lead down to 35-29 with 3:30 to go in the first half. The Falcons would draw as close as three points (38-35), but at that point, the DBU defense would go on to hold the Falcons without a point for the next 4:05, stretching into the second half.

In what was arguably the most dominant four-minute stretch of the Patriots' season so far, the group rattled off four three-pointers, two layups, and a free throw, to turn in a whopping 17-0 run. DBU's lead jumped from 38-35, all the way to 55-35 in the blink of an eye. Trevor Frank led all Patriots with six points in that dominant stretch. As the remaining 17:41 withered away on the Falcon Dome scoreboard, TJ Thomas dropped all 12 of his points to help ice the game for DBU.

Coach Dr. Blake Flickner had this to say on the win: "Good all around road win. First game back after a long break can show some rust, and at times we did, but overall our energy and execution was on point. Really proud of Justin and his double-double, but up and down the lineup, we got lots of great contributions, including 53 points from our bench."
