The Dallas Baptist University Patriot Baseball team improved to 2-0 on the year after defeating the Mavericks from UT-Arlington by the score of 4-2 on Thursday afternoon in Arlington.
Leading the Patriots at the plate was Junior Israel Victor, who went two for four with two RBI and Junior Matt Tucker, who added two RBI.
Starter Sophomore Randall Taylor picked up his first win of the season after pitching seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits with zero walks.
The Mavericks from UT-Arlington struck first scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning, on singles by Ryan Nelson and Cary Nelson.
The Patriots responded in the next inning, after Junior Jeremy Goldschmeding led off with a double and Sophomore Daniel Magness walked. Junior Brad Boles advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt, which set up Tucker’s two RBI single, tying the score at 2-2.
DBU struck again in the top of the eighth inning when Junior Cody Montgomery singled with one out and Senior Ryan Olivo doubled. Holder followed with a sacrifice fly to score Montgomery and Victor singled to score Olivo, leaving the score 4-2.
UTA threaten to score in the bottom of the eighth with a runner on second, but Holder made a leaping grab into the right field fence for the third out of the inning.
Junior Stuart Sutherland picked up the save, his first of the season, pitching a shutout eighth inning and striking out the side in the ninth.
The Patriots resume action on Friday afternoon at 3:00 when they host the University of Arkansas at Patriot Field.
