Dallas Baptist pushes past UTSA, 5-3

Dallas Baptist used a three-run seventh inning to push past the UT-San Antonio baseball team, 5-3, Thursday night at Wolff Stadium to improve to 4-2 on the season, while the Roadrunners fall to 0-5.

UTSA jumped on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the second on four hits to take an early 2-0 lead.

The Patriots answered with a run in the top of the third. Junior Brad Boles lined a leadoff double down the right field line, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a RBI groundout by Junior Jeremy Goldschmeding.

Dallas Baptist knotted the score at 2-2 in the top of the fourth. Junior Garrett Baker led off with an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Junior Matt Tucker, stole third and scored on a RBI groundout by Boles.

The Patriots chased UTSA starter Aaron Rodriguez in the seventh, scoring three runs on three hits. Tucker reached on a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Boles. Junior Cody Montgomery then doubled down the left field line to score Tucker with the go-ahead run. Goldschmeding followed with an RBI-single and later scored on a wild pitch to put DBU up, 5-2.

UTSA mounted a late rally in the bottom of the ninth, but Patriots closer Stuart Sutherland got out of the jam, leaving the final score 5-3.

Senior Barrett Pliler worked six innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and striking out three first his first win of the season. Sutherland picked up his second save of the year.

The Patriots resume action on Friday afternoon in game two against UT-San Antonio at 6:00 at Wolff Stadium.
