Brantley Shuts Down UTSA

The Dallas Baptist University Patriot baseball team improved to 5-2 on the season with a 6-2 victory over UT-San Antonio (0-6) on Friday night in San Antonio, behind Sophomore pitcher Rodney Brantley. Brantley pitched a complete game allowing two runs, on five hits and striking out five, while improving to 1-1 on the season.

The Patriots did not waste any time getting on the board, scoring one run in the tip of the first inning. Junior Cody Montgomery reached on an error to start the inning and moved to third on a single by Junior Jeremy Goldschmeding. Senior Ryan Olivo drew a walk and Junior Drew Holder was hit by a pitch, scoring Montgomery, leaving the score 1-0.

DBU added another run in the third inning, after Montgomery singled to start the inning and stole second and third base. Goldschmeding walked and Olivo added a RBI grounded, scoring Montgomery to put the Patriots up 2-0.

Montgomery helped the Patriots score again in the fifth inning, after walking to start the inning and advancing to third on a well executed hit and run by Junior Matt Tucker. Holder followed with a RBI double, chasing UTSA starter Josh Ruffin from the mound. Junior Israel Victor added a two RBI single, pushing the DBU lead to 5-0.

The Patriots increased their lead to 6-0 in the sixth. Sophomore Daniel Magness singled to start the inning and advanced to second after Junior Brad Boles drew a walk. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and Magness scored on a wild pitch by UTSA relief pitcher Caleb Barton.

The Roadrunners scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, with two outs, leaving the final score 6-2.

DBU will look for the sweep on Saturday afternoon in the third game of the series beginning at 2:00 at Nelson Wolff Stadium.
