Patriots Shutout by Texas Tech

February 22, 2005

Texas Tech defeated the Dallas Baptist University Patriots by the score of 7-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Dan Law Field in Lubbock. DBU falls to 6-3 on the season, while Tech improves to 8-1.

The Patriots were held scoreless for the first time in the last two seasons due to a solid pitching performance from the Red Raider pitching staff.

Texas Tech got on the board in the bottom of the third inning, scoring three runs on four hits and one error. Joseph Callender singled to start the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Drew Roberts. Callender stole third and scored on a RBI double by Cooper Fouts, who scored on an error by the Patriot defense. Chris Richburg added a two out double to left field, scoring two more runs, leaving the score 4-0 after three innings.

Fouts added a RBI single in the fourth to chase DBU Sophomore starter Brice Wells from the mound, increasing Texas Tech’s lead to 5-0. Wells, falling to 1-0 on the year, pitched three and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs, three earned and allowing six hits.

Texas Tech added to their lead in the eighth inning. Richburg doubled to start off the inning and pinch hitter Madison Edwards and Cody Fuller followed with RBI doubles off DBU reliever Sophomore Stuart Sutherland, making the score 7-0.

Picking up the win for the Red Raiders, his first of the season was Adam Lawford, who pitched six shutout innings, scattering five hits and striking out three.

Dallas Baptist will meet Texas Tech again this season, when the Red Raiders host the Patriots May 5-7 in a three game series at Dan Law Field in Lubbock.

DBU will resume action on Thursday night at 7:00 when they travel to TCU for the first game of the weekend series.
