TCU Defeats DBU 15-10 in Offensive Battle

TCU defeated the Patriots by the score of 15-10 on Saturday afternoon in game one of the doubleheader behind a solid offensive attack and pitcher Sam Demel. DBU fell to 6-5 on the season and TCU improved to 7-3.

Demel (1-1) pitched seven innings, allowing three runs, one earned and striking out six in the win, while the Horned Frog bullpen allowed the Patriots back into the game, allowing nine runs in the last three innings.

DBU came up a little short, managing 10 runs on 14 hits. Leading the Patriots at the plate were Juniors Matt Tucker, who had five RBI and Damien Gomez, who had three RBI and Senior Ryan Olivo, who finished the game going three for four, with two doubles.

TCU scored first, scoring five runs on six hits in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Ryan Pack reached on a walk, stole second and scored on a RBI infield single. Shelby Ford singled off DBU starter Junior Stuart Sutherland’s leg, knocking Sutherland out of the game. Relief pitcher Senior Barrett Pliler gave up a three-run homerun to J.J. Estrada and Matt Carpenter and Kyle Dahlberg both singled. Stuart Musslewhite added a RBI double, scoring Carpenter making the score 5-0.

DBU added a run of their own in the second inning, after Junior Israel Victor walked and advanced to third on a single by Sophomore Daniel Magness. Victor scored on a RBI groundout by Tucker, leaving the score 5-1.

TCU padded their lead in the fifth inning, with six runs on seven hits. Matt McGuirk and Andrew Walker singled to start the inning. Ford reached on a fielder’s choice and Chad Huffman and Estrada each RBI singles. Carpenter walked and Dahlberg followed with a bases clearing double. Musslewhite added a single and pinch hitter Keith Conlon followed with a RBI fielder’s choice, leaving the score 11-1 after five innings.

The Patriots scored two runs in the seventh inning. Olivo doubled to start the inning and Junior Drew Holder walked. Sophomore Daniel Magness reached on an error and Tucker added another RBI groundout. Gomez singled, scoring Holder, leaving the score 11-3.

The Frogs responded in the bottom half of the seventh, scoring three runs on three extra base hits. Dahlberg and Austin Adams doubled to lead off the inning and Jerid Buttell tripled to score two runs. Bo Cogbill added a RBI groundout, increasing the TCU lead to 14-3.

DBU mounted a comeback in the eight inning, scoring five runs. Junior T.J. Drotleff doubled to lead off the inning and Junior Jeremy Goldschmeding followed with a single. Holder singled scoring Drotleff and Magness was walked. Tucker reached on an error, scoring two more runs and Gomez added a two RBI single of his own, leaving the score 14-8.

TCU added one more run in the eighth inning, after Stephen Jackson walked and advanced to third on a single by Estrada. Jackson scored on a RBI groundout by Carpenter, increasing the Frogs lead to 15-8.

The Patriots threatened again in the ninth, after Holder doubled and scored on a double by Victor. Tucker added another RBI single, scoring Victor, but DBU could not manage any more, leaving the final score 15-10.

The Patriots resume action on Tuesday evening at 6:30 when they host Texas State University at Patriot Field.
