Victor Makes Impact in First Career Game for DBU

The Dallas Baptist University Patriot (1-0) baseball team opened the 2005 season with a 9-8 victory over the Rams from Texas Wesleyan University (1-1) on Saturday afternoon at Patriot Field.

The Patriots were led by Junior Israel Victor, who made his first career start for DBU and went 3-4, with the winning two run homerun and added four RBI.

The Rams scored two runs in the first inning off of DBU starter Sophomore Randall Taylor, taking an early 2-0 lead.

Junior Cody Montgomery doubled to lead off the first inning for the Patriots and Senior Ryan Olivo followed with an opposite field homerun to tie the game at 2-2. Junior Drew Holder added a double and Junior Israel Victor followed with a double of his own, scoring Holder, giving DBU the lead. Juniors Brad Boles and Matt Tucker added RBI singles to push the score to 5-2 after one inning.

The Patriots increased their lead in the second inning. Montgomery led off the inning with a solo homerun and Holder added another double and scored on Victor’s second double of the afternoon, making the score 7-2.

Texas Wesleyan added three runs on five hits in the third inning, chasing Taylor from the mound, bringing in reliever Junior Stuart Sutherland.

The Rams scored three unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning, taking the lead 8-7.

DBU reclaimed the lead in the seventh inning, after Olivo singled to start the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Holder. Victor followed with a two-run homerun, leaving the score 9-8.

The Patriots resume play on Thursday evening at 3:00 when they travel to the University of Texas-Arlington.
