March 1, 2005

The Dallas Baptist University baseball defeated Texas State by the score of 5-2 on Tuesday night and improved to 7-5 on the year. The Patriots broke a three-game losing streak in a shortened game due to rain and inclement weather at Patriot Field.

The Patriots scored first, managing one run in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI single by Junior Cody Montgomery, giving DBU an early 1-0 lead.

DBU added three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Juniors Jeremy Goldschmeding and Drew Holder walked to start the inning and Goldschmeding scored on a RBI single by Junior T.J. Drotleff. Senior Sean Burgess added a RBI sacrifice fly to score Holder and Sophomore Daniel Magness followed with a RBI single of his own, leaving the score 4-0.

Texas State responded with two runs of their own in the fourth inning, both unearned, closing the Patriot lead to 4-2.

The Patriots pushed across one more run in the bottom of the sixth, after Montgomery singled and stole second. He advanced to third on a fielding error and scored on an infield groundout by Goldschmeding, increasing the lead to 5-2.

Sophomore Rodney Brantley picked up the win for the Patriots, improving to 2-1 on the year, pitching five innings, allowing only five hits and two unearned runs. Sophomore Ricky Sparks got his first save of the season, pitching one shutout inning.

DBU resumes action beginning Thursday evening when they travel to Irvine, California to take on UC-Irvine in a three game series.
