Dallas Baptist University's baseball team continued to struggle on Thursday night when they were defeated by Fresno State by the score of 13-5 in tournament action. The Patriots fall to 9-10 on the year and 2-2 in the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic, while the Bulldogs improve to 10-13 on the season.
Leading Dallas Baptist at the plate, despite the loss was Sophomore Daniel Magness, who finished the game going 2-3 with two RBI.
Fresno State used a three-run homerun off of DBU starter Junior Stuart Sutherland in the first inning. Sutherland walked the leadoff batter DeAndre Miller and Nick Moresi followed with a single, setting up Beau Mills three-run shot, giving the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.
The Patriots scored two runs in the third inning, after Freshman Austin Krum doubled and advanced to third on a single by Junior Cody Montgomery. Krum scored on a single by Junior Israel Victor and Montgomery scored on a RBI groundout by Junior Drew Holder, closing the Fresno State lead to 3-2.
Fresno added another run in bottom of the third, after Sutherland walked Miller again to lead off the inning and he stole second. Christian Vitters singled to score Miller, increasing the Bulldog lead to 4-2.
The Bulldogs struck again in the fourth inning, scoring six runs on six hits, including a triple and a sacrifice fly, leaving the score 10-2.
DBU scored two runs in the top of the fifth on back to back two out doubles by Victor and Holder and Magness added a RBI single to score Holder, making the sore 10-4.
Fresno State increased their lead to 11-4, after Vitters lead off the sixth inning, with a solo homerun.
Montgomery singled to lead off the seventh for the Patriots and scored on a two-out double by Magness, closing the margin to 11-5.
The Bulldogs managed to score two more runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two out double, scoring two runs off DBU reliever Sophomore Jordan Craft, leaving the score 13-5.
Sutherland falls to 1-2 on the season, pitching six innings, allowing 11 runs on 12 hits.
DBU resumes action on Friday afternoon at 1:00 when they play Pennsylvania in day five of the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic in Fresno, California.
