The Dallas Baptist University Patriot baseball team defeated UT-San Antonio on Wednesday night at Patriot Field by the score of 9-4. DBU improved to 12-10 on the season, while UTSA fell to 4-15.
Leading the Patriots was Freshman Daniel Magness, who went 3-3 with a walk and two RBI and Junior Drew Holder, who went 2-4 with two triples and three RBI.
Sophomore Randall Taylor pitched eight innings, allowing three runs and scattering five hits to improve to 4-2 on the season, while striking out seven.
The Patriots struck first in the bottom of the third inning, after Junior Garrett Baker doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a RBI single by Junior Cody Montgomery. Junior Israel Victor walked and Junior Drew Holder reached on an error, scoring Montgomery. Sophomore Daniel Magness and Junior Jeremy Goldschmeding each added RBI singles, giving DBU a 4-0 lead.
The Roadrunners scored three runs on three hits and a walk in the top of the fourth inning, to close the DBU lead to 4-3.
The Patriots responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth, after Baker doubled again to lead off the inning and scored on a RBI single by Freshman Austin Krum, leaving the score 5-3.
In the fifth inning, DBU added three more runs after Victor singled to begin the inning and scored on a triple by Holder, who scored on an errant throw. Magness followed with a solo homerun over the right field fence, increasing the Patriot lead to 8-3.
The Patriots increased their lead to 9-3 in the eighth inning on a RBI single by Montgomery, scoring pinch hitter Junior TJ Drotleff, who doubled to start the inning.
The Roadrunners pushed across one run in the top of the ninth off Sophomore Jordan Craft, leaving the final score 9-4.
The Patriots resume action on Thursday night when they host Northeastern University from Boston at Patriot Field beginning at 6:00.
