Dallas Baptist scored 17 runs on 21 hits and defeated the Oregon State Beavers, ranked number 18 by Baseball America, on Thursday afternoon in Corvallis, Oregon by the score of 17-7. The Patriots improved to 17-10 on the season and their eighth in a row, while the Beavers had their five game winning streak snapped and fell to 17-4 on the year.
Leading DBU at the plate was Sophomore Daniel Magness, who went 5 for 6 with four runs scored and one RBI and Junior Israel Victor, who went 2 for 4 with three RBI, as well as Junior Jeremy Goldschmeding, who went 4 for 5 with three RBI.
Sophomore Randall Taylor turned in a solid performance, pitching six innings, allowing two runs and seven hits, while improving to 5-2 on the season.
The Patriots threatened to score in the first inning, after Victor tripled off the center field wall with two outs, but was stranded at third after Junior Drew Holder lined out to the warning track in right field to end the inning.
The Beavers loaded the bases in the first inning, with no outs, but Taylor worked out of a bases loaded jam with line drive double play and a fly out.
DBU got on the board in the second inning. Daniel Magness singled to start the inning and Goldschmeding drew a walk, setting up a sacrifice bunt by Sophomore Jimmy Thoma. Junior Garrett Baker followed with a two RBI single down the left field line. Junior Damian Gomez and Freshman Austin Krum each walked, chasing OSU starter Jake McCormick from the mound and Beaver reliever Kevin Joslyn walked Junior Cody Montgomery, loading the bases for Victor. Victor added his second hit of the game, a two RBI single, giving DBU an early 4-0 lead.
The Patriots increased their lead in the third inning, after Magness and Goldschmeding each singled to start the inning. With two outs, Beaver pitcher Kevin Joslyn balked on consecutive pitches, scoring Magness and leaving the score 5-0.
DBU struck again in the fourth inning, after Victor and Holder each walked with two outs and Magness followed with his third single of the game, scoring Victor and forcing OSU to make another pitching change, bringing in Kurt Steele. Goldschmeding followed with a RBI single, scoring Holder increasing the Patriot lead to 7-0.
Oregon State finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning, which was interrupted with a thirty-five minute rain delay. The Beavers scored two runs on three hits, shrinking the Patriot lead to 7-2.
Dallas Baptist responded by scoring two runs of their own in the top of the sixth. Holder walked with two outs and advanced to third on a double my Magness. Goldschmeding followed with a two RBI double, scoring Holder and Magness, making the score 9-2.
The Patriots added to their lead in the seventh inning. Baker and Gomez each singled to start the inning and Krum walked, setting up a RBI single by Montgomery. Victor followed with a RBI sacrifice fly scoring Gomez and Krum scored on a wild pitch. Holder added a RBI single, scoring Montgomery and Magness added his fifth hit of the night. Pinch hitter Junior Sean Burgess added a three-run homerun over the right field wall, his first of the season, pushing the score to 16-2.
