Dallas Baptist University defeated Sam Houston State University (9-16-1) by the score of 7-3 on Thursday afternoon at Patriot Field. The Patriots improve to 18-13 on the season and break a three game losing streak with the victory.
Leading the Patriots at the plate was Junior TJ Drotleff, who went 3 for 4 with four RBI, including a two-run homerun and Junior Jeremy Goldschmeding, who added three RBI of his own.
Picking up the win for the Patriots was Junior Stuart Sutherland, who improved to 3-2 on the season.
DBU responded in the fourth inning, after Junior Cody Montgomery doubled and Drotleff followed with his first homerun of the season, making the score 3-2.
The Patriots added another run in the seventh inning, after loading the bases with zero outs. Drotleff singled to start the inning and Junior Drew Holder walked and Sophomore Daniel Magness added a base hit bunt. Goldschmeding followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Drotleff. The Bearkats used a double play to end the inning, leaving the score tied at 3-3.
DBU took their lead in the bottom of the eighth. Junior Matt Tucker reached on an error and Freshman Austin Krum and Montgomery followed with singles, loading the bases for Drotleff, who hit a two RBI single. Magness reached on a walk and Goldschmeding added a two RBI double, increasing the Patriot lead to 7-3.
DBU will resume play on Friday afternoon when they travel to take on Texas A&M – Corpus Christi in doubleheader action beginning at 12:00.
