UC-Irvine Edges DBU in 10 Innings

UC-Irvine defeated the Patriots from Dallas Baptist University on Friday night by the score of 1-0 in 10 innings in Irvine, California. DBU now drops to 7-7 on the season.

UCI pitcher Chris Nicoll and Dallas Baptist starter Stuart Sutherland both pitched nine strong innings, but neither figured in the decision as a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th by designated hitter Bryan Petersen lifted UC Irvine to a 1-0 win Friday at Anteater Ballpark.

Sutherland faced 29 batters and struck out five while holding the Anteaters hitless through nine innings.

Nicoll, who struck out the side in the third, had a no-hitter broken up by catcher Austin Thornton’s two-out double in the sixth. The Patriots threatened again in the eighth with one out, getting back-to-back singles by Sean Burgess and Austin Krum. However, Krum was picked off and Daniel Magness struck out, leaving Burgess stranded.

In the bottom of the 10th, UCI catcher Mark Wagner led off with a grounder to Tucker, who bobbled the ball and then threw wide, pulling Magness off the bag. The Patriots then intentionally walked Tim Stewart and Erik Johnson to load the bases for Petersen. With the infield playing in, Petersen connected on a 2-1 offering from reliever Ricky Sparks that got by a diving Tucker for the game-winning run.

UCI reliever Steve Schroer retired the Patriots in order in the 10th to pick up the win and improve to 1-2. Sparks was hit with the loss, falling to 0-1 on the season.

UC Irvine improves to 8-6 while Dallas Baptist falls to 7-7. The two teams close out the series Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
