UC-Irvine Sweeps Patriots

UC Irvine catcher Mark Wagner was 5 for 5 at the plate and drove in three runs to lead the Anteaters to a 7-2 win over Dallas Baptist Sunday at Anteater Ballpark. The Anteater offense combined for 15 hits, including five doubles to improve to 9-6 on the season while DBU dropped to 7-8 overall.

Wagner drove in the first run of the game with a double in the top of the first to score outfielder Danny Miramontes. UCI extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth with three doubles and a single to score three runs. Outfielder Bryan Petersen led off the inning with a double to right and took third on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Chad Lundahl. Second baseman Brett Dalton and Miramontes hit back-to-back doubles, scoring Petersen and Dalton and Wagner would drive in his second run of the day with a single to left. Following a one-run fifth for UCI, Matt Anderson and Wagner each had RBI hits in the sixth to cap the scoring for the Anteaters.

Dallas Baptist got on the board with a run in the fifth. After Junior Matt Ritter drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Junior Drew Holder hit a single up the middle to put the Patriots on the board. Junior Cody Montgomery hit a leadoff triple in the eighth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Junior Israel Victor.

Dallas Baptist was led by Senior Sean Burgess, who was 3 for 4. Starting pitcher Sophomore Rodney Brantley went 5.1 innings, giving up seven runs on 11 hits and striking out five to fall to 2-2 on the season.

The Patriots resume action on Monday afternoon at 4:00 PST against Gonzaga in the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic in Fresno, California.
