DBU Sweeps Pan Am Behind Solid Defensive Play

The DBU Patriots defeated the Broncs from UT-Pan Am on Saturday afternoon by the score of 8-2 in the third and final game of the series behind several outstanding defensive plays. DBU swept the three game series, with a 13-3 and a 15-2 victory on Thursday and Friday nights.

DBU improves to 27-20 on the season and 14-2 at home, while Pan Am falls to 14-36. Sophomore Rodney Brantley picked up the win, improving to 4-4 on the season, pitching five and one third innings, allowing and unearned runs, scattering three hits and striking out five.

Leading DBU at the plate was Senior Ryan Olivo, who went 3 for 3 with a walk and one runs scored, as well as Freshman Austin Krum, who went 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Also Junior Matt Tucker went 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Patriots scored first, scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Cody Montgomery singled to start the inning and later scored on a RBI single by Sophomore Daniel Magness taking an early 1-0 lead.

Pan Am added a run in the second inning, but DBU responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Jeremy Goldschmeding reached on a passed ball and Krum doubled. Tucker followed with a two RBI double of his own, giving DBU the 3-1 lead.

DBU scored another run in the third, after Olivo singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Junior Drew Holder and moved to third on a fly out by Magness. Baker reached on an error, scoring Olivo, increasing the lead to 4-1.

The Patriots scored again in the seventh. Sophomore Austin Thornton singled to lead off the inning and Montgomery added a base hit bunt. Olivo followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners and then Holder hit a two RBI double, pushing the score to 6-1.

Pan Am scored one more run in the eighth inning, making the score 6-2.

DBU added two mores runs in the bottom of the eight. Krum and Tucker singled and pinch hitter Junior Sean Burgess added a RBI single to score Krum. Tucker later scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Montgomery, leaving the score 8-2.

DBU will resume action on Monday night when they host Texas Wesleyan at Patriot Field beginning at 6:00.
