DBU Defeats McNeese State

Dallas Baptist University defeated McNeese State by the score of 9-8 on Tuesday night at Patriot Field. The Patriots improve to 20-15 on the season, while McNeese State falls to 13-21.

DBU got on the board in the bottom of the second inning, after Sophomore Daniel Magness doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on Junior Garrett Baker's first homerun of the season, giving DBU an early 2-0 lead.

The Patriots added to their lead in the fourth inning with two more runs. Sophomore Jimmy Thoma singled and Baker followed, setting up Junior Damian Gomez's two RBI triple, leaving the score 4-0.

The Cowboys responded with four singles in the fifth inning, scoring only one run after Junior Jereme Wilson worked out of a bases loaded jam, closing in on the Patriot lead 4-1.

McNeese State struck again in the sixth on a three-run homerun, tying the game at 4-4.

DBU retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a solo homerun over the left field fence by Freshman Austin Krum, for his third homerun of the year, giving the Patriots the 5-4 lead.

McNeese State added three more runs in the seventh on three Patriot errors and two singles off of DBU reliever Rodney Brantley, taking their first lead 7-5.

The Patriots came back in the seventh inning, on a two RBI double off the left field wall by Junior Israel Victor, scoring Sophomore Jimmy Thoma and Magness, who each singled to reach base. Baker followed with a single, scoring Victor and giving DBU the lead 8-7.

McNeese scored managed to score one run in the top of the eighth to make the score 8-8.

Magness and Thoma singled start off the inning to lead off the ninth inning and Victor laid down a two-strike bunt, all with zero outs. Baker followed with a RBI sacrifice fly to score the winning run 9-8.

DBU will resume action on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 for game two against McNeese State at Patriot Field.
