Patriots Fall to SIU

The DBU baseball team was defeated by Southern Illinois University on Friday afternoon at the Sam Houston State University Bearkat Invitational by the score of 8-5. The Patriots fall to 4-2 on the season, while SIU improves to 3-1.

SIU scored one run on three hits in the first inning and used a three-run homerun in the third inning, to take an early 3-0 lead.

DBU got on the board in the top of the fourth inning, after Senior Jeremy Goldschmeding singled and Seniors Cody Montgomery and Drew Holder walked to load the bases. Senior Damian Gomez hit a sacrifice fly to score Goldschmeding and Freshman Will Stramp added a RBI single to make the score 3-2.

The Saluki scored two runs in the fourth inning and loaded the bases in the fifth inning with zero outs and only managed to score one run, as relief pitcher Junior Brice Wells worked out of the jam to leave the score 6-2.

The Patriots added one run in the seventh inning, on a RBI double by Goldschmeding, but SIU scored two more times in the bottom of the inning to increase their lead to 8-3.

Goldschmeding tripled to start the ninth inning and Holder followed with a two-run homerun. Junior Matt Tucker doubled, but was left stranded, leaving the final score 8-5.

The Patriots will resume action on Saturday afternoon in their third and final game of the Sam Houston Invitational Tournament, when they take on Texas A&M - Corpus Christi beginning at 1:00 at Bearkat Stadium.
