DBU Beats Bearkats in Extra Innings

The Patriots from Dallas Baptist University defeated Sam Houston State University on Thursday night in Huntsville, by the score of 5-4 in 12 innings.  This was the first game of the Sam Houston Invitational Tournament, which also includes Texas A&M - Corpus Christi and Southern Illinois. 
 
Sam Houston took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, but DBU responded in the top of the sixth by scoring three runs.  Senior Israel Victor and Freshman Brandon Bantz each singled to start the inning and after moving up on a groundout by Sophomore Austin Krum, scored on a two RBI double by Senior Jeremy Goldschmeding.  Senior Drew Holder followed with a RBI single to give the Patriots a 3-1 lead.
 
DBU added another run in the seventh after Junior Matt Tucker singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a double by Krum, making the score 4-1.
 
The Bearkats scored one run in each the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to tie the game 4-4 and force extra innings.
 
Goldschmeding hit a solo homerun in the top of the 12th inning, giving the Patriots the 5-4 win.
 
Senior Jeff Gilmore picked up the win pitching four and two-thirds innings, allowing only one hit and one run and striking out three to get his first win of the season.  Junior Randall Taylor pitched seven innings, allowing only two runs on six hits, while striking out four, but did not factor into the decision.
