The DBU Patriot baseball team lost the opening game of the Midland Rockhounds Tournament on Thursday evening, by the score of 13-5 to the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
The Patriots scored in the first inning, on a solo homerun by Senior Cody Montgomery, but Texas Tech scored a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Tech scored two more runs in the second inning and four more runs in the third, all off DBU starting pitcher Senior Jeff Gilmore, who was stuck with the loss, falling to 1-1 on the season. Gilmore pitched five innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs, only three of which were earned.
DBU scored one more run in the sixth, but once again Tech responded with six runs in the seventh off of Junior Ricky Sparks. The Patriots scored two runs in the eighth and one run in the ninth to leave the final score 13-5.
DBU had a season high, six errors on the night, to only one error by the Red Raiders.
The Patriots resume action on Friday afternoon at 1:00, when they take on Oral Roberts in their second game of the tournament.
