DBU Prevails in 16th Inning

On Thursday afternoon, the DBU Patriot Baseball team defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by the score of 7-6 in 16 innings on a walk off homerun by Senior Israel Victor at Patriot Field.  The win increases the Patriots record to 15-8 on the season, while the Islanders fall to 9-13.

Senior Michael Gardner pitched eight innings in relief, scattering just three hits and allowing zero runs, while striking out seven, facing only 25 batters in eight innings, only one over the minimum.

The Islanders scored two runs in the first inning, both of which were unearned on two hits, to take an early 2-0 lead.

DBU responded in the bottom half of the inning, after Senior Cody Montgomery homered down the left field line to leave the score 2-1.

Starting pitcher Junior Tyler Rowland, pitched five innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits.  Reliever Senior Stuart Sutherland came into the game in the sixth inning with two men on base and struck out the side.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Senior Jeremy Goldschmeding tripled to start the inning and later scored on a RBI double by Senior Drew Holder.  Holder later scored on an Islander throwing error, giving DBU the 3-2 lead.

The Islanders countered with four runs in the top of the seventh inning on three hits and four Patriot errors, retaking the lead 6-3.

The Patriots mounted their comeback in the ninth, after Freshman Brandon Bantz walked and Sophomore Austin Krum singled.  Montgomery followed with a sacrifice fly to score Bantz.  Goldschmeding reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error, which set up a game tying homerun by Holder.  Freshman Evan Bigley reached second on another Islander error, but DBU was unable to score again, forcing extra innings.

Victor led off the 16th inning with a solo homerun over the right field wall, giving DBU the win 7-6.

DBU will resume action on Thursday afternoon at 12:00 in doubleheader action against LaSalle University at Patriot Field.
