Patriots Shut Down #14 Oklahoma

The DBU Patriots defeated the No. 14 (USA Today/ESPN) Oklahoma Sooners on Tuesday evening at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman, Oklahoma by the score of 9-3.  With the victory, the Patriots improve to 19-10 on the season, while the Sooners fall to 20-7. 

Picking up the win for the Patriots was Junior Rodney Brantley, who improves to 6-1 on the season, pitching six innings, allowing five hits and one run, while striking out four and allowing the Patriot defense to turn three double plays. 

Leading the Patriots at the plate was Senior Cody Montgomery, who went 3 for 5 with one RBI and one run scored and Senior Israel Victor, who went 2 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored.  Also Freshman Evan Bigley went 2 for 3 with one RBI and two runs scored.  The Patriot offense used two big innings in the second and third en route to the victory, facing a total of six Sooner pitchers. 

DBU got on the board in the second inning.  Junior Matt Tucker was walked to lead off the inning and Freshman Evan Bigley was hit by a pitch.  Junior Ross Olson drew a walk, which set up a two RBI single by Victor.  Sophomore Austin Krum hit into a double play, scoring Olson and Montgomery followed with a RBI single to scoring Victor, giving the Patriots a 4-0 lead. 

The Patriots added another run in the third inning.  With two outs, Bigley reached first after being hit by a pitch again and Olson drew another walk.  Victor added another RBI single to score Bigley and Senior Brad Boles followed with a two RBI double to push the score to 7-0. 

OU managed to score one run in the bottom of the fourth inning, after Ryan Rohlinger tripled down the right field line to start the inning and later scored on a RBI groundout to leave the 7-1. 

DBU added two more runs in the top of the seventh after Montgomery singled and Senior Jeremy Goldschmeding walked and Tucker was hit by a pitch to load the bases and set up a RBI single by Bigley.  Senior Damian Gomez added a sacrifice fly to score Goldschmeding and increase the Patriot led to 9-1.

The Sooners countered in the bottom of the seventh with two runs of their own on four hits off of DBU relief pitcher Senior Stuart Sutherland, to make the score 9-3. 

Junior Ricky Sparks pitched the final two innings for DBU, retiring the Sooners in order to leave the final score 9-3.

The Patriots resume action on Friday evening when they host Northwestern State University at Patriot Field beginning at 6:00.
