Brantley Pitches Patriots Past UT-Pan Am

The Patriots from Dallas Baptist University defeated UT-Pan American by the score of 5-3 on Thursday evening at Patriot Field.  With the victory the Patriots improve to 11-7 on the year, while the Broncs fall to 8-11.  

Junior Rodney Brantley picked up the win, pitching eight and a third innings, scattering six hits and striking out six, allowing only one run, improving to 4-1 on the season.  

DBU first scored in the fifth inning after Senior Drew Holder and Junior Matt Tucker walked to start the inning. Holder moved to third on a groundout by Freshman Evan Bigley and later scored on a groundout by Senior Damian Gomez, taking a 1-0 lead.  

The Patriots were held hitless for the first five innings by UT-Pan Am starter Ricky Ibarz.  

DBU added two more runs in the sixth inning, after Sophomore Austin Krum reached first when he was hit by a pitch and later scored on a triple by Senior Cody Montgomery. Montgomery scored on a sacrifice fly by Senior Jeremy Goldschmeding, giving the Patriots a 3-0 lead.  

In the eighth inning, Goldschmeding singled and Holder followed with a double down the right field line, which set up a two RBI single by Tucker, increasing the DBU lead to 5-0.

The Broncs scored three runs in the top of the ninth, leaving the final score 5-3.

The Patriots resume play on Friday evening in game two of the series against the Broncs beginning at 7:00 at Patriot Field.
