The Dallas Baptist University Patriot baseball team defeated the University of Hawaii- Hilo by the score of 12-7 on Friday night at Patriot Field. The Patriots improve to 25-15 on the season, while the Vulcans fall to 15-32.
The University of Hawaii-Hilo struck first scoring an unearned run in the top of the first inning.
The Patriots responded in the bottom half of the inning by loading the bases for Senior Drew Holder, who hit his 16th homerun of the year, a grand slam to give DBU a 4-1 lead..
Hawaii answered in the top of the second innings with three runs on three hits to tie the score 4-4.
DBU retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with five runs. Tucker led off the inning with a triple to right center field and scored on a RBI double by Israel Victor. Boles and Krum walked to load the bases for Senior Cody Montgomery. Montgomery answered with DBU's second grand slam of the night, making the score 9-4.
Hawaii-Hilo scored three runs in the top of the fifth off three singles and a stolen base and threatened to score more, but DBU turned a double play to preserve the lead, 9-7.
The Patriots scored three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Matt Tucker singled and Seniors Israel Victor and Brad Boles, as well as Freshman Evan Bigley all drew walks. Sophomore JT Bloodworth added a RBI single and Sophomore Austin Drew was hit by a pitch to force across another run, leaving the score 12-7.
The Vulcans added one run in the ninth, but were unable to push across any more runs, to leave the final score 12-8.
DBU will resume action on Saturday afternoon in doubleheader action beginning at noon for games two and three of the series against the University of Hawaii-Hilo.
