The Dallas Baptist University Patriot Baseball team defeated Fresno State University by the score of 10-3 on Thursday night in Fresno, California, in game one of the four game series. With the win, the Patriots improve to 28-15 on the season and the Bulldogs drop to 28-15, as well.
The Patriots did not waste any time getting on the board, scoring two runs in the first inning, after lead off hitter Sophomore Krum singled and Senior Cody Montgomery followed with a single of his own. Senior Jeremy Goldschmeding added a sacrifice bunt, which set up a two RBI single by Junior Matt Tucker, to give DBU and early 2-0 lead.
DBU added three more runs in the second inning, after Senior Damian Gomez doubled and Senior Brad Boles was hit by a pitch. Krum added another single, which set up a two RBI double by Montgomery and Goldschmeding picked up a RBI on a fielder's choice.
Fresno State added two runs in the bottom half of the inning, off of DBU starter Senior Michael Gardner.
In the third inning, the Patriots added three more runs. Freshman Evan Bigley drew a walk and Senior Israel Victor singled up the middle, which set up a three run homerun by Gomez, increasing the lead to 8-2.
DBU added two more runs in the fourth, after Goldschmeding singled and score on a homerun by Senior Drew Holder, his 17th homerun of the season, giving the Patriots a 10-2 lead.
Fresno State was only able to score once more, scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth, which left the final score 10-3. Gardner picked up the win, pitching six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and only walking one, improving to 3-3 on the season.
The Patriots will resume action on Friday night at 8:35 CST for game two action against Fresno State in Fresno, California.
