The Dallas Baptist University Patriot baseball team was defeated by the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles by the score of 12-9 on Friday afternoon in game one of the doubleheader at Patriot Field.
The Patriots struck first, scoring three runs in the first inning on five hits off of Southern Mississippi's starting pitcher Scott Massey. Seniors Jeremy Goldschmeding and Drew Holder singled and Freshman Evan Bigley added a RBI single. Senior Israel Victor followed with a two RBI double to give DBU an early 3-0 lead.
In the second inning, DBU scored again, after Sophomore Austin Krum tripled with two outs and scored on a two-run homerun by Senior Cody Montgomery, increasing the lead to 5-0.
Junior Matt Tucker hit a solo homerun in the third to make the score 6-0, after making the final out of the top of the inning on a spectacular play on a foul out against the wall down the right field line.
The Golden Eagles rallied in the fourth inning scoring seven runs on four hits, including a two run double and a two run homerun, chasing DBU starter Rodney Brantley from the game and leaving the score 7-6.
Goldschmeding hit an opposite field solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 7-7.
DBU added another run in the sixth to retake the lead 8-7. Krum lead off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Montgomery. Krum later scored after stealing third and reaching home on a throwing error by the Southern Miss catcher.
Southern Mississippi responded with a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh and one run in the ninth to take the lead 10-8.
The Patriots scored one run in the bottom of the eighth after Montgomery doubled and scored on a Golden Eagle error to leave the score 10-8.
The Golden Eagles managed two more runs in the top of the ninth on two hits and two Patriot errors, to increase their lead to 12-9.
