DBU Wins Final Game Against Southern Miss

The Dallas Baptist University Patriots defeated Southern Mississippi by the score of 5-4 on Saturday afternoon at Patriot Field, to avoid the three game sweep.  With the victory the Patriots improve to 23-12 on the season, while the Golden Eagles fall to 24-10.

Southern Miss got their first run in the top of the fifth inning, after a lead off double, taking an early 1-0 lead.

DBU responded in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Senior Brad Boles reached on an error to start the inning and Sophomore Austin and Senior Cody Montgomery each followed with bunt singles to load the bases.  Senior Drew Holder and Freshman Evan Bigley added RBI singles.  Senior Israel Victor drew a bases load walk to score a run and Senior Damian Gomez followed with a two RBI single, to give DBU a 5-1 lead.

The Golden Eagles added three runs in the top of the seventh inning, chasing starter Junior Randall Taylor from the game, leaving the score 5-4.  Taylor picked up the win, improving to 4-1 on the season.  Junior Ricky Sparks picked up the save, his third of the season, pitching the final two and a third inning, allowing zero hits and zero runs, while striking out four.

Southern Miss threatened in the top of the eighth, after putting men on second and third with zero outs, but the Patriots used a double play to get out of the inning without allowing a run, preserving the 5-4 victory.

The Patriots resume action on Tuesday evening when they travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to take on the Cowboys from Oklahoma State beginning at 6:30.
