DBU's Baseball Team, who competed in the Pepsi Johnny Quick Classic over the weekend, played their final two games of the Classic on Saturday.  The Patriots played the Iowa Hawkeye's in game one and defeated them 18-5, while game two paired DBU up against the Fresno State Bulldogs, which they defeated 12-10.  With the two victories, DBU improved to 13-10 on the season.

The Patriots did not waste any time in game one by racing out to a 6-0 lead after one in inning of play.  Junior Austin Krum led off the game with a double and advanced to third off a single by Freshman Austin Knight.  Krum and Knight then scored when Senior Garrett Baker tripled and he scored after Sophomore Evan Bigley hit a two run homerun to left centerfield.  Junior Matt Tucker walked, stole second, and scored on a double by Sophomore Trevor Head; he then scored after he was forced in by three consecutive walks.

DBU padded their lead to 12-1 in the top of the fourth, when they scored six more runs.  Junior Nick Santos started the inning off with a single and advanced to second off a single by Tucker.  Junior Andrew Pirtle singled to left field, which loaded the bases for Krum, who hit a two RBI double.  Knight walked to load the bases for Baker, who hit his fifth homerun and first grand slam of the year.

Bloodworth started the top of the sixth inning off with a double to left centerfield and scored when the Bulldogs committed a throwing error off a Krum ground ball.  Knight walked to bring up Baker, who hit a single, which scored Krum.  Santos then doubled to right field to score Knight and bring the score to 15-4 after six innings of play.

Sophomore Will Stramp led off the top of the eighth inning with a solo homerun to right centerfield.  The Patriots finished their scoring in the top of the ninth when Tucker hit a solo homerun, Senior Jimmy Thoma doubled, and Stramp doubled to score Thoma.

The Hawkeye's managed to score five runs off seven hits and one DBU error.  Freshman Victor Black improved his season record to 3-1, after he pitched 6.0 innings, scattered four hits, allowed three runs, and struck out six.

Baker led the Patriots at the plate with three hits, seven RBI, and two runs scored, while Krum went three for five, with two runs, and two RBI.  Tucker finished the game with three hits in five at bats, three runs scored, and one RBI.

The Bulldogs and Patriots smashed the baseball all over the ballpark in DBU's second game of the day on Saturday.  The Patriots found themselves trailing 2-0 heading into the top of the fourth inning.

Knight led the top of the fourth inning off with a double and scored on a single by Baker.  Stramp singled up the middle to score Baker and tied the score 2-2 after four innings.

DBU took the lead in the top of the fifth after Bloodworth began the rally by reaching base on a hit by pitch and advanced to second on a single by Krum.  Bloodworth then scored on a single by Knight, which brought up Baker, who hit a three run homerun to left centerfield.

Fresno State answered right back in the bottom half of the inning when they scored four runs off of two hits, one DBU error, and two walks, which brought the score to 6-6 after five.

The Patriots scored one run in the sixth when Tucker hit a solo homerun and scored two more runs in the seventh off a two run homerun by Bigley.

The Bulldogs not backing down at all matched DBU run for run in the bottom half of both the sixth and seventh inning.  Fresno State scored one run in the sixth off a double, a sacrifice bunt, and a fly ball.  The Bulldogs scored two runs in the seventh to tie the score when they smashed a two run homerun over the left field fence.

DBU scored three more runs in the eighth and put the game away for good.  Junior Austin Thornton began the rally by singling and advanced to second when Bloodworth reached base on an error by the Bulldogs, who committed five for the game.  Krum then reached base on error, which also allowed Thornton to score.  Baker then came up and continued to smoke the ball when he drove in Krum and Bloodworth with a single.

Picking up the victory for DBU was Senior Jereme Wilson, who pitched 2.0 innings, allowed three hits, three runs, and struck out one, while Senior Randall Taylor picked up the save for his second of the season.

Baker finished the game with three hits and five RBI, which gave him 12 RBI for the day, while Knight went three for four, with three runs scored, and one RBI.

The Patriots will be in action again on Tuesday, March 20, at 7:00, when they play the University of Okalahoma , at the DR. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, Texas .
