Patriots Commit Five Errors in Loss To Bearkats

Box Score

The Patriots Baseball Team commits five errors which lead to six unearned runs in a 9-6 loss to Sam Houston State on Tuesday night.  DBU entered the game on a three game winning streak and threw their ace Freshman Victor Black at the Bearkats, but early errors cost them the game.  With the loss DBU fell to 8-7, while SHSU improved to 11-6 overall.

DBU started the game off with a bang in the top of the first inning, when Senior Garrett Baker hit his fourth homerun of the season to give the Patriots an early 1-0 lead.

With the lead and the confidence from the past three games, the Patriots might have started to get comfortable because in the next two innings things started to unravel for DBU.  In the bottom of the second inning, DBU allowed one run, on one hit and two errors and then continued their poor play in the bottom of the third by allowing five runs, on five hits, and two more errors.

Leaving the score after three innings of play 6-1 in favor of the Bearkats, including four errors committed by DBU in the first three innings.

DBU determined not to go down without a fight started to mount their comeback in the top of the fourth and fifth innings, when they scored five runs off of seven hits and one SHSU error.

With the score tied up the Patriots inserted Senior Jereme Wilson to try and shutdown the Bearkats for the rest of the game.  Wilson was able to get the first batter out of the sixth inning, then gave up two hits and a walk to load the bases.  Wilson then got the Bearkats batter to hit a ground ball to the shortstop, which could have been the double play that ended the inning, however DBU misplayed the ball to commit their fifth error of the night.  The error allowed two more runs to score, giving Sam Houston State the lead for good.

SHSU scored one more run to pad their lead and then shut down DBU for the final three innings.  The Patriots had a few opportunities to cut the lead but ended up not being able to get the key hit when needed.  DBU left five base runners on base in the final three innings of the game.

Picking up the loss for the Patriots was Wilson, who pitched 3.0 innings, allowed two runs, on two hits.  DBU starting pitcher Black, pitched 4.0 innings, allowed five hits, and six unearned runs.

Sophomore Will Stramp continued to smash the baseball all over the field by going three for four with one RBI to lead DBU at the plate.  Sophomore Evan Bigley also had a strong night with two hits in five at bats and three RBI.

The Patriots will look to jump back from the tough loss on Thursday night, at 6:00, when they welcome the University of Toledo to Patriot Field.
