The Patriots Baseball Team played the Broncs from UT Pan American for the fourth and fifth consecutive times on Friday. DBU, who swept UT-PA at Patriot Field this past weekend, split the first two games of the series in
Edinburg, Texas .
DBU won game one 10-0, riding the arm of Sophomore Jordan Meaker and lost game two 5-4, after they could not keep the bats hot. With the victory and loss, the Patriots overall record is now 24-19, while the Broncs is 16-35.
Meaker, who was the Patriots game one starting pitcher, continued to mow down the competition after he shutout the Broncs to pick up his fifth victory of the season. For the game, Meaker went 7.0 innings, scattering three hits, allowing no runs, and striking out one Bronc.
The Patriots scored in double figures for the third straight game against the Broncs in game one after, Sophomore Evan Bigley led all batters with four hits in five at bats, including two home runs. Bigley also scored two runs and drove in five, while Senior Garrett Baker and Junior Austin Krum each had two hits, two runs scored, and two RBI.
Game two painted a different picture, with DBU struggling from the plate. DBU managed to out hit the Broncs, 8-6, but the difference, which has been a thorn in the side for the Patriots all year, was leaving 11 men on base.
Senior Randall Taylor started game two for the Patriots and picked up the loss to fall to 5-3, after he pitched 6.0 innings, allowing two earned runs, six hits, and striking out six Broncs.
Leading DBU at the plate in game two was Baker, who went two for five, with one RBI, while six other Patriots contributed with one hit. Sophomore Trevor Head's hit was a two run home run, which gave him 11 home runs on the season.
The Patriots and Broncs will finish out the three game series tomorrow afternoon when the first pitch is tossed at 1:30.
