Bigley's Grand Slam Helps Secure DBU Victory

Box Score

The DBU Baseball Team wrapped up their three game series with UT Pan American on Saturday afternoon when they defeated the Broncs, 7-4.  The Patriots, who scored six runs early, used strong pitching out of the bulletin to help secure the victory.  With the win, DBU improved to 25-19, while UT-PA fell to 16-36.

The Patriots jumped out to the early lead and scored all the runs needed to pick up the win in the top of the second inning.  Junior Nick Santos led off the inning with a single and advanced to second off a single by Sophomore Trevor Head.  Each runner then advanced a base when Sophomore Brandon Bantz walked, which brought up Junior Austin Krum, who hit a two RBI single through the right side.  Freshman Austin Knight then walked to load the bases up for Sophomore Evan Bigley, who hit a grand slam over the left field wall, which gave DBU a 6-0 lead after two innings of play.

The Broncs managed to score one run in the third inning and three in the bottom of the ninth, but other than that were shut down by the Patriots pitching staff.  Starting the game for DBU and picking up the victory, was Freshman Victor Black, who went 4.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits, and striking out five.  Also having a strong night on the mound was Freshman Ryan Goins, who pitched 3.1 innings, allowed no hits, no runs, and struck out five.

Every batter in DBU's lineup had at least one hit and six players had two hits or more.  Leading the way for the Patriots was Bigley, who went three for five, with one run scored, and four RBI, while Krum had two hits in five at bats, two runs scored, and three RBI.

The Patriots will look to keep slapping the baseball around the ball park on Tuesday night when the travel to Lubbock, Texas to take on Texas Tech University , at 6:00.
