DBU's Baseball Team traveled to Hattiesburg, Mississippi on May 12 and 13 to take on Southern Miss University in a three game series.  The first two games of the series proved to be two competitive teams battling it out over 24 innings, including 11 in game one and 13 in game two.  The Patriots, who held the lead in each game, was not able to secure a victory in either game.

The Patriots fell to the Golden Eagles, 4-3 in game one and 9-8 in game two.  Game three saw Southern Miss come out of the gate early with, nine hits and nine runs in the first inning.  With the momentum on their side they finished off the three game sweep of the Patriots, 12-1.  With the three loses DBU fell to 27-26 on the season, while the Golden Eagles improved to 33-19.

In game one of the three game series, Southern Miss raced out to the early 3-0 lead, when they scored a run in each of the first three innings.  The Patriots determined not to let Southern Miss take the game away from them answered their three runs with three of their own, when they a run in the sixth, seventh, and eighth inning.

With the score tied, each team posted a scoreless ninth and tenth inning.  The Patriots threatened in each of the innings but were held scoreless heading into the bottom of the eleventh inning.  The Golden Eagles, who were close to ending the game in the bottom of the tenth, but a sensational double play by Junior Nick Santos ended their chances, wrapped the game up in the eleventh when pinch hitter Keith Winstead drove a pitch off the right field wall to score the winning run from second base.

Game two proved to be just as exciting if not more exciting as game one.  The Patriots and Golden Eagles were tied going into the fourth inning, when Southern Miss scored a run in the fourth and fifth to take a 4-1 lead.  Again, the stubborn Patriots determined not to go down without a fight, answered with four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead.

The Golden Eagles took the lead right back in the bottom of the seventh with three runs, which gave them a 7-5 lead heading into the eighth and ninth innings.  Junior Austin Krum stepped to the plate in the eighth and hit his ninth home run of the year to tie the score and in the ninth inning the Patriots advanced a base runner to third base with one out.  Sophomore JT Bloodworth drove the first pitch he saw to deep center field, which allowed the go head run to score.

With a one run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Golden Eagles managed to load the bases and drive in the game tying run.  Freshman Ryan Goins pitched his way out of the jam to keep the score tied, which allowed the game to go to extra innings.  Each team went scoreless for three innings, heading into the thirteenth inning.  The Golden Eagles shut down the Patriots in the top of the thirteenth and like they had done all night perfectly manufactured a base runner in to scoring position at third base.  With one out in the inning, Goins threw a wild pitch that hit the plate and bounced over Sophomore Brandon Bantz head, which allowed the base runner from third base to score the winning run.

Game three saw the Golden Eagles come out smoking in the first inning, when they scored nine runs on nine hits and one DBU error.  The Patriots were able to score one run in during the game off a single by Sophomore Evan Bigley and a double by Senior Matt Tucker.  Southern Miss managed to score three more runs and finished off the Patriots in seven innings using the mercy rule.

Leading DBU at the plate for the series was Bigley, who ripped five hits, with two RBI and three runs scored, while Tucker was four for 11, with three RBI and one run scored.

Senior Randall Taylor continued to pitch lights out for the Patriots, when he threw 8.0 innings, scattering eight hits, allowing two earned runs, and striking out four Golden Eagles in his game one no decision.

The Patriots will wrap up their 2007 season when they travel to Farmington, New Mexico to take on New Mexico State in a three game series starting on Thursday, May 17, at 6:05.
