Patriots Take Game Two In Final Series of the Year

Box Score

The Patriots Baseball Team scored all six runs in two consecutive innings to pick up their second straight victory over New Mexico State University on Friday night.  With the 6-5 victory DBU improved their overall record to 29-26, while NMSU fell to 22-33.

Each team remained scoreless until the fifth inning when both teams scored runs.  The Patriots started the scoring in the top of the fifth when Sophomore JT Bloodworth began the rally with a double to right field and scored the first run of the game off a triple by Junior Austin Krum.  Freshman Austin Knight drove in Krum with a single through the right side.  With two outs in the inning, Senior Matt Tucker stepped to the plate and hit a two run home run to give the Patriots a 4-0 lead.

The Aggies returned the favor in the bottom of the fifth when they scored three runs on four hits and an error by DBU.  With the score 4-3, heading to the sixth DBU extended the lead to three with two more runs in the sixth.  Sophomore Brandon Bantz drove in Junior Nick Santos with an RBI double and advanced to third on a fly out by Bloodworth.  Krum then walked to force a first and third situation, which allowed DBU to execute a double steal perfectly.  Krum stole second and on the throw to second base, Bantz raced home to score the Patriots second run of the inning.

NMSU made one more run at the lead in the seventh but were only able to push across two runs, which made the score 6-5 in favor of DBU heading into the eighth.  Freshman Ryan Goins entered the game for the Patriots and picked up a two inning save when he shut the Aggies down for the final seven outs.

Goins final line was 2.1 innings pitched, allowed three hits, no runs, and struck out three to pick up his second save of the season.  Freshman Victor Black picked up the victory for the Patriots, after he pitched 6.2 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits, and striking out 10.

Knight led DBU at the plate going two for four, with one run and an RBI, while Santos continues to hit the ball well with a two for four night.  Tucker finished one for four, with one run, and two RBI.

The Patriots will look to sweep the Aggies on Saturday afternoon when they play their final game of the 2007 season starting at 2:05.
