The DBU Baseball Team traveled to
College Station to take on the # 11 ranked Texas A&M Aggies in the first game of a three game series on Thursday night. The Patriots and Aggies played a 12 inning game, with each team scoring runs in the ninth inning to force the extra innings.
The Aggies pulled the game out in the bottom of the 12th inning when they managed to get a base runner to first base and score the winning run off an RBI double by designated hitter Luke Adams. With the 11-10 victory, the Aggies improved to 36-11, while DBU fell to 25-21.
DBU took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Freshman Austin Knight scored off an RBI sacrifice fly by Senior Matt Tucker, only to be answered by the Aggies in the bottom of the first after they tied the score up with an RBI single.
The Patriots and Aggies traded runs in the third inning and then DBU took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning off a two run home run by Sophomore Trevor Head. Again, the Aggies had an answer for the Patriots in the fourth, when shortstop Brandon Hicks hit a three run homerun to give Texas A&M a one run lead.
DBU answered right back in the top of the fifth when Senior Garrett Baker hit his team leading 13th home run of the season, which was a two run shot to give the Patriots a 6-5 lead. The Aggies then scored three runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take an 8-6 lead heading into the ninth inning.
The ninth inning started out perfect for the Patriots when they loaded the bases up with no outs and Sophomore Evan Bigley stepping up to the plate. Bigley answered the call after he hit the first pitch he saw over the left field wall, which gives him two grand slams on the season.
DBU, who took a 10-8 lead into the bottom half the ninth, was not able to hold the lead after the Aggies manufactured two runs off an error by the Patriots and an RBI triple.
Picking up the loss for DBU was Freshman Ryan Goins, who pitched 3.0 innings, allowing one earned run, three hits, and striking out two, while Gary Campfiled picked up the victory for the Aggies to improve to 1-0.
Sophomore JT Bloodworth led DBU at the plate going three for six, with two runs scored, while Bigley finished the night three for seven, with four RBI, and one run scored.
The Aggies and Patriots will play game two Friday night at 6:30.
